Backyard!!!!

The real reason April has been so busy is that after living in our house for 9 years (we've owned it for 5 1/2), we finally put in the back yard. It was all weeds and junk trees and horrible. I wish I had taken a before picture. It was always embarrassing for people to see how bad it was. Most of my family had not even seen the space before. The worst part is that our renter, Brian, has the entrance into his apartment in the backyard. So everyone that comes to visit him has had to see the mess. We just didn't have the money to finish it before.

So every good weather day in April has had us outside working. The apple tree hadn't been pruned and needed a lot of work. Many junk trees had to be removed, along with several ancient grape vines. Then there were the weeds. YUCK!! So we worked for 3 weeks and you could see quite a difference. Then my dad brought his tractor over and after 2 days, it was a complete transformation. What he accomplished with his tractor in 2 days, would have taken us countless hours and very sore backs. The ground was very far from level and a lot of dirt had to be moved around. Being the most wonderful Grandpa that he is, he taught Tyler to drive the tractor and let him help level out the dirt. That was a fun day for Tyler!

My brother joined us and helped us rake the dirt and get it ready for sod. This picture is during the raking, so it's looking pretty good. And finally, last Thursday, we laid down the beautiful sod. Wow! Yea! It's fantabulous!!

Then we had rain and snow all weekend. Now, 5 days later, you can hardly see the lines in the grass. I am so happy to finally have a backyard for the kids to play in. It is fenced in so Zach can have more freedom outside. We'll be moving the sandbox into the perfect, always-shady area, which will make the transformation complete! The kids are now begging for the dog we have promised for years. I think we can delay them one more year until Zachary is a little older, but then we'll need to follow through. As David put it, "Can we get a dog before I move out, please?" Any recommendations for a good dog breed with children, preferably not too big to join us in the house sometimes, please let me know.

Looks great! Aren't grandpa's the best?! So my advise to you is save your yard and DO NOT get a dog! But since you have older kids that won't let you forget I think you are stuck ;) We loved our yellow lab! He was the perfect dog. We got him when he was 3 yrs old. He still had puppy in him but wasn't crazy excited all of the time. That was nice :) The twins came along a few years later and they pulled at him, sat on him and beat him with trains and blocks-- it NEVER phased him. Sadly he is in heaven now. But if we ever do get a dog again it will be a Lab. Sorry for all of the details but that's my vote :) And if you can get him a little older from a shelter or friend I would recommend it. That way you only have to potty train one little boy and not two ;) Good luck! Allison

I vote lab to. Had one and absolutly loved her. I also vote get one a couple of years older cause most of the naughtiness will be gone by then. i.e. chewing up everything, jumping on the kids and so on.

I am so excited for you guys. I heard that Schnauzers (sp) were good dogs for indoors. Maybe something that is a medium size dog - not too small for going outside - not too big for the house. Go online and find a site that let's you put in the things that are most important to you and they will suggest some breeds. Let us know when that happens!
